Screen Your Pet for Diabetes and Kidney Disease Without Leaving Home

Diabetes is on the rise for both dogs and cats. According to the Banfield Pet Hospital State of Pet Health 2012 Report, “diabetes mellitus (has) increased by 32 percent in dogs and 16 percent in cats.” The same is true for kidney disease, which is one of the leading causes of death in cats. And kidney disease is not exclusive to cats. Many dogs, especially senior dogs, suffer from the condition as well.

Could your pet be at risk for these deadly diseases? How could you tell? Would you recognize the symptoms? According to the Banfield report, “55% of cat owners don’t realize cats can have kidney disease without appearing ill.” That’s right. Pets (dogs and cats alike) can suffer from diseases like these without showing outward signs, particularly early in the course of the disease. And, of course, catching a disease early on often means greater success in treating the disease.

What if you could check for these diseases with a simple urine test performed in the comfort and convenience of your own home? That would be a good thing, right? Well, now you can.

Access Pet Wellness provides you with an easy to use solution for checking your dog or cat’s urine at home for diseases like diabetes, kidney failure and more. The product, called PawCheck, is a fully enclosed test system that offers a safe, easy and clean solution for pet parents eager to take charge of their pet’s health care. Currently, three different test devices are available.

  1. The PawCheck Diabetes Test checks for glucose (sugar) in your pet’s urine, a common finding in diabetic pets.

  2. The PawCheck Kidney Failure Test looks for protein in the urine that can be an indication of kidney disease.

  3. The PawCheck Urinary Tract Infection Test screens for blood, white blood cells and nitrites in urine, substances that can be indicative of infection.

  4. PawCheck test kits designed for cats include a sample of Kit4Kat cat litter or a similar type of non-absorbent cat litter to help you collect your cat’s urine directly from the litter box.

I had a chance, thanks to receiving a free sample from Access Pet Wellness, to try one of these test kits. They truly are easy to use. Simply collect the urine, open the packaging, dip the test in the urine, wait the specified length of time, then compare the test strip to the chart provided and you have your result. I particularly appreciate the inclusion of the non-absorbent cat litter in the feline test kits. This cat litter makes collecting cat urine a breeze.

Though not meant to replace regular veterinary checkups and health care, these tests give pet owners the freedom to screen their pet for these common diseases in the convenience of their own home. Positive test results should prompt a visit with your pet’s veterinarian. Naturally, routine veterinary examinations and health care should not be discontinued in favor of any of these tests. However, these test kits can give pet owners some peace of mind about their pet’s health in between veterinary visits.

Would you like to have the chance to try one of these tests for your pet? Access Pet Wellness has generously agreed to provide a sample test kit to one lucky giveaway winner. Enter below for your chance to win. (US entries only, please.)
